ReCII – From Lists to Legends
Editor’s Note
Philip joined the ReCII Board in March 2025, stepping into the role of Speaker Chair.
While he might modestly claim he's still "getting started," his contribution is already quietly vital - ensuring our weekly Monday meetings have the spark, insight, and international flair that keep our members coming back.
Here’s his honest and evolving take on what it means to step in, show up, and grow into the role.
Finding My Feet
By Philip Baumann
My role at ReCII is simple in theory - I organise our regular Monday meetings.
In practice, that means finding speakers, coordinating topics, managing schedules, and keeping the rhythm of the club flowing week after week.
I officially started in March 2025, so I’m still relatively new to the role. But already, things are shifting. We’re transitioning away from manual lists toward a better system, and I'm getting a feel for what works (and what doesn’t).
Tapping the Network
One of the biggest surprises? I had no idea how powerful the Rotary network truly is.
The moment I stepped into this position, I realised I wasn’t alone. Our members bring connections from all over the world - and suddenly, lining up speakers wasn’t just doable, it was exciting.
It’s been easier than expected to reach out, get introductions, and invite brilliant people into our space. The speakers we’ve hosted so far have brought international perspectives, bold ideas, and real relevance to what we’re building at ReCII.
Still Taking Shape
If I’m being honest, I still feel like I’m warming up. I haven’t been in the club long enough to call out major milestones or completed projects - but that’s okay. This is Rotary, not a race.
For now, my focus is on listening, learning, and showing up. The team around me - especially the Board - has been nothing short of incredible. There’s real drive here. Real follow-through. I wasn’t sure at first if we could pull this off. But we did. And we’re still doing it.
Lessons I’m Taking With Me
Here’s something I’ve learned quickly: if you don’t try, you’ll never know. That might sound simple, but stepping into a leadership role in a Rotary club - especially a new one - requires a bit of courage. You have to put your hand up, take the leap, and trust.
And more than anything, you have to trust the team. This group? Powerful. Every single member brings something unique. And when that energy aligns, it’s pretty amazing what we can achieve.
Looking Forward
As we move into our second year, I think the challenge might actually grow.
The first year had momentum.
Now, it’s about stability, consistency, and building on the foundation we’ve laid.
I want to keep developing in this role - and also contribute more directly to projects beyond the Monday meetings. There’s room to grow, and I’m here for it.
So what’s next for me? The same job - but better. More involved. More connected. More curious.
And maybe just a little more confident.
